Roger Whitney Shattuck was born on August 20, 1923 in Manhattan, NY. He was a pilot,
teacher, and the author of essays and books in the areas of French literature, art and music
of the twentieth century. He has written ten books.
Proust's Way: A Field Guide to 'In Search of Lost Time' was published in 2000. It was the
fourth book Shattuck wrote about Proust. This book is a guidebook to Proust's work,
examining different translations and pointing out where various editors made mistakes.
He takes delight in Proust's comic sense and helps readers enjoy In Search of Lost Time
as one of the world's finest novels. The New York Times review said: "Shattuck leaves us
not only with a deepened appreciation of Proust's great work but of all great literature as well."
