Many of us in recovery feel that there is no good reason for pain. It seems to be pointless. Some of us have asked why hasn't God taken away pain? But physical and emotional pain have purpose in the real world. If we didn't feel physical pain, we wouldn't even know to blink our eye so that we could get rid of the foreign particles that build up over time. When our muscles start to hurt, it tells us to stop exercising. Emotional pain, in much the same way, tells us to stop engaging in relationships that are painful. It also forms a basis of comparison with those times when we experience joy. So, we must accept pain as a necessary part of life. But we can remember, joy is also a part of life.
