Cate Tiernan is one of the pen names of Gabielle Charbonnet who was born on
July 24, 1961 in New Orleans, LA. She is an editor, administrative assistant, linguist,
and the author of children's books and young adult fiction. She has written at least
seventy-five books.
Book of Shadows was published in 2001 and was the first book in the Sweep series.
The series follows the story of a teenage girl, Morgan Rowlands, who discovers that
she has come from a long line of witches. Not only that, but along with that ancestry,
she has inherited magic of her own. The series was called Wicca in the UK, Belgium,
the Netherlands and Australia and White Magic in Italy and France. Publishers Weekly
reported that the book ". . . brings a supernatural spin to classic teen issues - popularity,
romance, alienation and the search for self. . . . She introduces the Wiccan material with
some depth as well with a skillful degree of ambiguity; readers will not know
immediately whether or not the series embraces Wicca."
