When we were in active addiction, we tried to escape the consequences of our actions by telling ourselves (and anyone who would listen) that we were different. We believed we really had it rough. Other people just didn't understand. It was our attitude that our hardships made us unique and it was reasonable for us to circumvent the rules. The truth is, there is no excuse for not following through with recovery. Not poverty, not sickness, not loneliness, not depression, not anything. It's time to let go of the false sense of uniqueness and feel a part of the community of recovery.
