As we go through the process of conducting a moral inventory as part of the Twelve Steps, we will learn some basic truths about ourselves. It gives us a chance to think about our characters, think about our secrets, and contemplate our true natures. We may come to realize that there has been a misalignment between who we are on the inside and who we present to others on the outside. Once we attain this new understanding of ourselves, we may want to take steps to reconcile our behavior. For example, if we have a secret dream, such as changing careers, we might want to take steps to make that dream a reality. This increased knowledge of ourselves is one of the gifts of recovery.
