Cleveland Amory

Cleveland Amory was born on September 2, 1917 in Nahant, MA. He was a reporter,
commentator, television critic, animal rights activist and author of social commentary
and animal stories. He has written more than 30 books and numerous articles.
The Cat Who Came for Christmas was published in 1987. It is the first in a trilogy
written about Amory's cat, Polar Bear. Amory finds the cat one Christmas Eve in an
alley and takes him home. The book outlines the trials and tribulations of teaching
Polar Bear to live indoors as well as Amory's work in promoting animal rights during
that time. The Cat Who Came for Christmas was on the New York Times bestseller list
for nonfiction for more than 20 weeks, sitting at number one for five weeks. Amazon.com
quotes a review by Norman Cousins: "Cleveland Amory has probably done more for
more animals than any other person in this country. But what he has done here, for this
particular animal, is in some ways just as remarkable. He has written a book which,
from start to finish I found powerfully compelling, an extraordinary combination
of humor and philosophy - both his own and his cat's."
