Sara Paretsky was born on June 8, 1947 in Ames, IA. She is an author of detective
fiction. She has written more than twenty books and short stories.
Indemnity Only was published in 1982 and was the first in a series of mysteries
featuring V.I Warshawski, a female private eye. The San Jose Mercury-News reported
that: "Paretsky is a smooth writer and a funny woman, good at evoking seedy urban
environments and taking wry potshots at middle-class aspirations . . . [She] has created
a scrappy, entertaining, idiosyncratic fictional character who is a woman, so hooray for her!"
